‘Polestar’ is a reliable, heavy-cropping runner bean producing bright green, smooth, fleshy pods that are completely stringless when picked young. Early to flower and crops over a long season. A vigorous climbing variety that needs support and is ideal for kitchen gardens and allotments.

Simple sowing & growing instructions (UK)

1) When to sow
• Sow indoors (recommended): mid April–May for planting out after frosts
• Direct sow outdoors: late May–July (once frost risk has passed and soil has warmed)

2) How to sow
• Sow 1 seed per pot (7–9cm) of seed compost
• Sow 2.5–5cm deep
• Keep warm and bright; keep compost moist (not waterlogged)
• Seedlings usually appear in around 7–14 days in good conditions

3) Plant out / spacing
• Harden off for 7–10 days
• Plant outside after the last frost in a sunny, sheltered spot
• Grow in rich soil with added compost/manure
• Space plants about 20–25cm apart at the base of canes/poles (wigwam, A-frame or netting)

4) Care
• Water well in dry spells (runner beans like consistent moisture)
• Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds
• Tie in young shoots to supports as they climb

5) Harvest
• Pick regularly once pods form to keep plants cropping
• For best flavour, pick pods young (around 15–20cm) before they become coarse
