Sowing Instructions:

  1. When to Sow: Sow seeds indoors from February to April or directly outdoors from April to June, depending on your climate.
  2. Seed Preparation: Soak seeds in water for a few hours before planting to enhance germination.
  3. Sowing Indoors: Use seed trays filled with seed compost, sow seeds at a depth of 1 cm (0.4 in), and keep them warm and moist.
  4. Germination: Seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days at temperatures of 18-22°C.

Growing Instructions:

  1. Transplanting: Once seedlings have developed 2-3 true leaves and outdoor temperatures are consistently warm, transplant them into well-drained soil in a sunny spot, spacing plants 30-40 cm (12-16 in) apart.
  2. Soil Requirements: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Aim for a pH of 6.0-7.0.
  3. Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Keep soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging.
  4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth.
  5. Pest Control: Watch for pests such as aphids and caterpillars. Use organic insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
  6. Harvesting: Fennel Romanesco is typically ready to harvest in 90-100 days. The bulbs can be harvested when they reach a diameter of 10-15 cm (4-6 in). Cut the bulbs at the base, and trim the fronds for use in cooking.
