Echinacea purpurea, also known as purple coneflower, has pink flowers and a large, orange-brown cone in the centre. Try growing Echinacea in drifts towards the middle or back of a border to create a beautiful cottage garden, or sow among grasses and rudbeckias to create a lovely prairie-style garden.
The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators. This drought-tolerant variety makes for a lovely cut flower and flowers from June to September at an approximate height of 90-100cm.

Purple coneflowers are the primary ingredient used in herbal teas designed to strengthen the immune system. Today there are more than 200 medicines derived from echinacea Purpurea extract.

How to grow Echinacea Purpurea from seed
Sow January-June
How to sow purple coneflower seed
Sow in pots or trays in a greenhouse at 18-21°C, lightly cover the seed with vermiculite and keep the soil lightly moist but not wet.
Transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots. Then 6-8 weeks after germination, transplant outside at 30 x 30cm (12 x 12") spacings.
