How to grow hollyhocks from seed

Sow seed on the surface of the compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite or finely sieved compost. Place in a propagator or in a warm place at around 15-20°C (59-68°F) until the seeds germinate.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant each seedling into individual pots or a multi-cell tray.

Plant out, spring-raised plants into a sunny border 45cm (18") apart. Late summer/ autumn raised plants can be overwintered in a cold frame and planted out the following spring. When the hollyhocks  have finished flowering, cut down the flower, which will help improve the following year's growth
