A very slender branched annual with hairy stems and feathery leaves as the base of each stem. The flowers are large and vivid scarlet with a black base. Naturally occurs as a weed in light cultivated soils, especially corn fields, poppies are popular with bees, so they are a great addition to your garden.

The flowers of the field poppy have long been used as a painkiller for soothing mild aches and pains (e.g. toothache, earache and sore throat), a mild sedative/relaxant, an expectorant for treating catarrh and coughs, as a digestive, and even for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and in lipstick.
