This hybrid herbaceous plant is a cross of watermint and spearmint & the main source of peppermint oil, long used in medicine and for flavouring mints-with-holes and other confectionery; it can grow up to 60cm.
Familiar, indispensable and an easily grown perennial. The familiar aromatic leaves come with the bonus of beautiful and majestic spikes of mauve flowers in the autumn. Loved by bees.

How to grow Peppermint
Sow March-May
How?
Sow indoors. Surface sow onto lightly firmed, moist, well-drained seed compost. Press seeds into the soil but do not cover. Light is needed for germination. Propagate 18-20°C. Germination can be slow and erratic, taking many weeks.
Transplant seedlings once large enough to handle into 15cm pots. Acclimatise and plant out once the danger of frost has passed.
Cut back regularly to encourage new growth and to prevent flowering (if growing for leaf production). Will die back to ground level in winter. Divide plants every 3 years to maintain plant vigour. Top dress with compost in autumn.
