Key Features:
- Variety: Gladiator F1 Parsnip
- High Yield: Consistent, large crops of quality roots
- Disease-Resistant: Excellent resistance to canker
- Rich Flavour: Sweet and nutty, perfect for cooking
- Easy to Grow: Ideal for both beginner and experienced gardeners
Sowing Instructions:
- When to Sow: Sow seeds directly outdoors from March to May when the soil has warmed.
- Soil Preparation: Choose well-drained soil in a sunny position. Avoid freshly manured soil as it can cause root forking.
- Sowing Depth: Sow seeds 1 cm deep, spacing them 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) apart in rows.
- Germination: Seeds germinate within 14-21 days; be patient, as parsnips can take time to emerge.
Growing Instructions:
- Thinning: Once seedlings are 5 cm (2 inches) tall, thin to one plant every 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) to allow space for root development.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods, to promote strong root growth.
- Soil Care: Weed regularly to reduce competition and ensure roots develop properly. Avoid disturbing the soil too deeply near roots.
- Fertilising: Fertilise sparingly with a balanced fertiliser or add compost before planting; avoid high nitrogen as it can lead to leafy growth.
- Pest Control: Monitor for pests such as carrot flies; cover with horticultural fleece if needed.
- Harvesting: Parsnips are generally ready to harvest from October onwards, after approximately 150-180 days. They sweeten with the first frost, enhancing flavour. Use a fork to gently lift roots without breaking.
